i'm pretty sure there is. i've not seen it though. if i remember correctly, i was showing sifu some of the stuff on chan's site and when i ran across it, i thought i remember him saying something about jow ga having some kind of mantis form. can't remember for sure though.

I don't know of one, but then again, there are lots of things that I don't know of...

Welcome Highland

there is praying mantis under Chow (Jow) Ah Nan, Chow Gar Praying Mantis, but that is an entirely different Chow (Jow) system.

So there is Jow(Chow) Gar Praying Mantis, but not under Jow(Chow) Lung or any of the other brothers.

years ago this guy From Europe introduced members of the U.S. Jow ga to a form called "jow ga praying mantis" at that time it was accepted in the u.s. to be the same system. It was discovered later that it wasn't the same system, but actually a form under Chow Ah nan system. the problem is that some people never found out that it wasn't the same system under Jow Lung.

there is even another school/style of kung fu seldom heard about using the Chow Gar(Jow) name. same characters, but not related. i met this school a few years ago.

It would be nice to add "praying mantis" to our system's curriculum, but as of now i don't know of any Praying mantis under the 5 tigers.

in the process of promoting Jow Lung's Jow Ga, it seems important to try and clarify this particular issue when necessary

regards
FGJ

thanks for that clarification. I always wondered because i've seen websites from like hungary or something called chow ka praying mantis. Also in our kwoon there is a picture and article about Sifu Dean Chin and i could swear it said he learned jow ga praying mantis. I'll have to double check that tonite.

Hi Jow Ye Roc

Sigung Chin had a friend from England who taught Chow (Jow) Ga Tong Long (praying mantis). I vaguely recall reading something where it mentioned Sigung Chin's name and "mantis" but i think it was written in the wrong context. SiGung Chin himself made a list of forms he knew, a very long list, and according to this list (that i got from my sifu ) there is no mention of Jow Ga Praying Mantis. Also i just happened to have a list of the old D.C. Chinatown school curriculum (that i got from my sifu) and there is no mention of Praying Mantis, only jow ga & chin woo forms.

check out the history of and lineage of Chow (Jow) Praying Mantis and you'll see there is no relationship. Could one particular Jow Ga Branch from Jow Lung etc... have adopted a Praying Mantis form, maybe so i don't know? It seems reasonably possible since some branches have adopted monkey, snake, and dragon forms under our ancestors name, but i am pretty sure "praying mantis" isn't an original.

i've heard that Chow Praying Mantis is an awesome style, but i think out of respect for both our ancestors we should make this distinction known.

regards
Funggwajong :D

I train at chans and we do have to mantis forms in our jow ga. I think my sifu might have added it to our system. It is something a little different and adds quite a feww new techniques to understand.

i think thats actually quite onto it..

I did some chow gar myself with Sigung Tom Lo in Brisbane, who uused to be a member of the Australian Chinese Martial Arts Committee or whatever the body is.. and also in thaat organisation is another man Henry Sue, who alsoo carries a chow gar lineage but where Sigung Tom Lo marries that with a family wu taichi and some wingchun, GM Henry Sue incorperates his into a mantis to make it dong gong chow gar tong long. Apparently they both have some connections back home in China through inter-pollination of various lineage, and imo, what happened and how that came to be, is that waay back when the "southern" temple was operational, it met and merged there with some fall out from vietnam and local family stylings.
There're a couple of links here you can have a look at, and I'm not huuuge on either of those, so don't be too hard on me, but check these out if you like..

The Chow Gar of Tom Lo and Henry Sue are two different styles.
Tom Lo is Chow Lung and his brothers Chow Gar, and Henry Sue is from Chow Gar Southern Mantis (or Tong Long). Same name, different styles.
Cheers
