there is a teacher near me who teaches choy lay fut, and his sifu's si gung learned from jow bil (or jow lung, i forgot). the forms he learned are called "fu pow 1, fu pow 2...to fu pow 5". i have been wanting to visit him to see which forms they are.

It was probably Jow Biu. the teacher you are referring to may be connected to the Chan Chow Wang Assoc. Hong Kong (Choy Lee fut).
These particular forms you mentioned (1,2, path etc.) "Lo Fu Pow Kuen", "Yi Lo Fu Pow Kuen", if i recall correctly, they are forms unique to this branch which are attributed to Jow Biu. Members from this particular branch of choy lee fut have attended banquets honoring Jow Biu in HK.

i'm curious, at what point do you teach these other forms? (beginner, intermediate, advanced, etc...) both jow ga man and myself (and a few others here) take what you would call "dean chin's jow ga". My sifu was taught by him and after he passed he then continued under his most senior student, deric mims. do you have video of these forms? i would be interested in seeing what they look like!

Hey Funny :D
The forms that Sifu Ron Wheeler Teaches in his videos are the Unique Sifu Dean Chin Jow Ga forms. I think their are clips of Sifu Ron Wheeler performing Sifu Chin's "Fa Kuen"

See you Saturday!

i teach bong bo at the level that i learned it, right after big tiger. no particiular reason, just that it was when i learned it. but 18 hands, is not on my list of required forms. so i will just teach it when the feeling gets me to do so. some of the forms i received quietly, like the bak mei forms and eagle claw forms, i do not teach as part of my curriculum, and i do not demo them, as i was told not to. Deric, i dont know if you remember, i did one of the eagle claw forms when si gung was here in 90, and raymond went through the roof! i believe sifu had some forms he had a special place for, so only some people got certain things for whatever reason. i tried my best to retrieve as much as i could from those people, but you know, people forget....i did know that much of it was not jow ga, but it was what sifu wanted to pass down and i dont care where it came from.

i try to stay in the order that i learned things, and like i said, for no real reason. what i plan more carefully is the order that i teach the fighting techniques and strategy.

sory, i am not that advanced to have anything on video. but i will be in DC this summer for Raymond Wong's tournament, so i can demo them for you if you'd like.

Deric, nice website! i'd like to see some of the ones that you do different from the ones we did back in the day. did you get them from si gung?

All of these forms are original jow ga forms. Most jow ga forms have different variations. So as far as the fu pow 1,2,5 thing i dont know much about.

Except that there is some debate that "Siu Hung Kuen "Small Hung Fist" (empty hand form )" is original Chow Gar...?

Hi Tailik

It is more likely to be one of the Lacey brothers of Bak Sing CLF, whose Si Gung, Kong On, was a student of Chow Lung for 4 years before Chow Lung passed, Kong On then learned Bak Sing CLF.

Hey What's up "Mo" (dc_jowga) thanks for the compliment on the site. It was the work of my "Funny Tiger".

LMAO yeah i remember that moment and a few others just like that one, lol. :D You kept me in stitches "Mo"

Hey Fu Pau your absolutely correct about the Kong On choy lee fut, jow lung relationship. i've seen a picture of Kong On placing incense for Jow Lung.

Dc_jowga I thought the Lacey's were down near Freemont & aren't you up around Sacramento, which should be quite aways from you if i'm correct or maybe it's my poor geography skills? There is another Choy Lee Fut line that has a connection to Jow Biu as well. It would be interesting to know the lineage of the school near you.

I know we're way off the mantis topic, but it will nice to see you at Raymond's tournament. i'm sure Howard Davis will be there and I'm also sure he'll bring up the time he nearly sidekicked me through the old chinatown school wall during sparring class many, many, many, many years ago :o He claims it was an accident, but he laughed too hard for me to believe it.

Fu Pau your also right about the debate regarding Siu Hung Kuen, i have my own opinion, but maybe in another thread

By the way, it wouldn't be correct to say on this forum that any of the forms taught in our school are "original" jow ga forms. Who are we to say that

Tailik (Derek)

yeah, it is the lacey family. but they have a school in the south bay, so the person i would be meeting with, if i could ever go down there, is not part of the family, but teacher of the style.

can you get me the contact info for the choy lay fut school there? i'm just getting back into the chinese martial arts community, it would be good to see some. almost all the kung fu in my area is "kenpo" in disguise.

my goal is to attend both of your tournaments this summer, as long as i can get away. i just opened my second location last week. see you guys this summer!
